Error:(23, 17) Failed to resolve: junit:junit:4.12

I had the same problem. Solved by adding url for missing repository in the build.gradle file:

android {
    [...]
    repositories {
        maven { url 'https://repo1.maven.org/maven2' }
    }
    [...]
}

That's it.

Just remove the "testCompile 'junit:junit:4.12'" from build.gradle file:

Go to File -> Project Structure. Following window will open:

From there:

remove the junit library (select junit and press "-" button below ) and add it again (select "+" button below, select "library dep.", search for "junit", press OK ). Press OK to apply changes. After around 30 seconds your gradle sync should work fine.

It's not able to get junit library.

After adding above line inside android block in build.gradle file, it resolved problem. This can be because your Android studio doesn't have junit library.

Probably your gradle is incomplete, I recommend you add the following

android{
    repositories {
    maven { url 'http://repo1.maven.org/maven2' }
}

but in some cases won't work , you can completely delete it from you dependencies in your gradle.

I think it will be OK if you reinstall the android studio with the deleting gradle folder condition which is in user folder .gradle

Here is what I did to solve the same problem. I am behind a firewall, which is same issue as yours I suppose. So I had tried removing the

testCompile 'junit:junit:4.12' line 

but that didnt work for me. I tried adding below lines of code:

repositories {
    maven { url 'http://repo1.maven.org/maven2' }
}

Even that did not work for me.

I tried removing (-) and readding (+) Junit4.12 from the library dependencies under Module Settings. Still that did not work for me.

Tried syncing and rebuilding project several times. Still did not work for me.

Finally what I did was to manually download the Junit4.12.jar file from mvnrepository website. I put this jar file in the Androids Workspace under the Project folder inside libs folder. Then go to Module Settings > Dependencies Tab > (+) > File Dependency > under Sleect path window, expand the 'libs' folder and you will find the Jar file you copied inside there. Select the File and click 'OK' Now remove the previous version of junit4.12 from the list of dependencies.

You should have one entry "libs\junit-4.12.jar" in the Dependencies list. Now click 'OK'.

Now Gradle will rebuild the project and you should be good to go.

It happens because HTTPS is blocked by Proxy. Try to change from default jcenter (which uses HTTPS) into HTTP.

Before

repositories {
     jcenter()
}

After

repositories {
    jcenter {
        //Default one is HTTPS
        url "http://jcenter.bintray.com/"
    }
}

Repeat the above step for allprojects.

allprojects {
  repositories {
    jcenter {
        url "http://jcenter.bintray.com/"
    }
  }
}

Or changing from jcenter to mavenCentral also worked

   mavenCentral()

I received this error after creating a new project. In the build.gradle file, I had this:

jcenter()

I change it to the following and the error went away:

jcenter {
    url "http://jcenter.bintray.com/"
}

I think this is because I am behind a firewall and specifying the url like so changes it from https to http

Probably you are behind proxy. Happened to me, used my mobile tethering (no proxy) rebuild project and error disappeared. Returned to original connection (with proxy) and rebuild with no errors.

Are you using proxy? If so, the problem can be in missing network configuration for https in your gradle.properties file.

AndroidStudio puts automatically your default proxy settings to gradle.properties file in your project, but only for http and forgets https.

So basically your gradle.properties file needs to contain both http and https config:

Mostly this issue will come when ever you update your SDK, at the time of project creation Gradle build fails. If you add the maven and jcenter repositories to your build.gradle(Module:app) your problem will solved.

The error is caused by missing jar files. My simple solution is just by copying all the files that does not resolve to the C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\gradle\m2repository... (your file path may be different). I got around 6 dependencies that cannot be resolved, junit is one of them and the others are com and org and javax. Since I am behind a firewall, even if I added the code for the repository, the Android Studio doesn't seem to access it. I went to the maven repository and downloaded all the files that will not resolve. Problem solved and the Gradle sync without error. But I am a certified newbie with only 1 day experience so I do not not if this is the proper way to do it.

Example error: Cannot resolve com:squareup:javawriter:2.1.1

Step 1: I created a path C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\gradle\m2repository\com\squareup\javawriter\2.1.1\

Step 2: I downloaded all the jar files from the maven repository: http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/com/squareup/javawriter/2.1.1/

Step 3: I manually downloaded all the .jar files from this directory

Step 4: I copied them to C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\gradle\m2repository\com\squareup\javawriter\2.1.1\

I repeated this to all the files that did not resolve including the junit.

For junit, here is the directory I created: C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\gradle\m2repository\junit\junit\4.12 and then I copied the junit-4.12.jar inside this directory and the junit error disappeared.

Go to File -> Project Structure -> dependency There you will find -> junit:unit:4.12

On the right hand side ..select compile from the drop down. Simple.. its done.

My installation of Android Studio is completely offline. To resolve these kind of problems I have used the Process Monitor. It showed that a few files are missing within "Android Studio\gradle\m2repository". I have downloaded all files from

http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/junit/junit/4.12/ http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/hamcrest/hamcrest-core/ repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/hamcrest/hamcrest-parent/1.3/ (I can only post two links...;-))

and copied these files in "Android Studio\gradle\m2repository". You have to create the structure below "m2repository" as it is below "maven2". Maybe there are more missing files, but at this time at least Gradle build is finished without errors.

I was having same problem.

1 option: Download junit 4.12.jar and copy it in your lib folder and restart android studio. Benefit u don't have to create any new project

2 option: Create a new project having a internet connections and copy all the java and XML code in the newly created project. Benefit this problem will be solved permantly

Look through for many answers but nothing works. Fortunately had found the easy solution. No need to comment junit4.12 or delete it. The problem is here:

- androidTestCompile files('libs/junit-4.12.jar')

This part shows us the path to look for the file in the library in your's project. No idea why but for some reason by the default it is empty. In my case the path is:

C:\Users\arzakhar\AndroidStudioProjects\MyApp\app\libs

Sure you can delete this line in code build.grandle(Module.app) but you may need it later. Here is the solution:

1 - download junit-4.12.jar or copy it from you Android Studio folder, normally it should be there. In my case, it was here:

C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\lib

to the directory mentioned above(to your project)

2 - delete & add

My other problem was that the Gradle build was too slow!

If you do like mdew you need to this any time you're creating your project to do this

So if you want to set default option to maven

Do this:

Go to the folder:

C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\plugins\android\lib\templates\gradle-projects\NewAndroidProject\root

Then open the build.gradle.ftl file with notepad++ or notepad and replace all jcenter() with mavenCentral().

I couldn't work out why Android Studio was not syncing with gradle. It turned out that it didn't like my VPN, so watch for that!

Go to Go to "File" -> "Project Structure" -> "App" In the tab "properties". In "Library Repository" field put 'http://repo1.maven.org/maven2' then press Ok. It was fixed like that for me. Now the project is compiling.

Just connect to Internet and start Android Studio and open your project. While Gradle Sync it will download the dependencies from Internet(All JAR Files). This solved it for me. No Editing in Gradle file ,all was done by Android Studio Automatically. Using Android Studio 2.2 :)

Also don't forget to install Java JDK 1.x(7 or 8 all works fine).
